MANABU IKEDA

Manabu Ikeda often takes more than a year to create his colossal-scale world visions with meticulous pen-and-ink artistry. His work is drawn from childhood experiences in nature and scenes encountered on trips. His painting “Buddha” — featuring a huge Buddha statue soaring from the center of the work — was inspired by a visit to historic ruins in Thailand, where he saw a similar statue swallowed by an ancient tree. This was the first work in which he used colored inks and chose artificial objects as his main motif. His painting “Kobo-shi (History of Rise and Fall)” contains castles, cherry blossoms, and crowds, depicting Japanese history as his main theme and combining many timelines in one painting. Castles and walls of various shapes are other major elements in this work, reflecting the artist’s enjoyment of rock climbing as a hobby. If you carefully view his works in this exhibition, you may be able to spot his signature hidden in all his drawings.
